Australia Village of Hope |
|
The funds that we have collected to start building the Australia Village of Hope has now been sent over to the Mission in Haiti. This money will be used to buy the land where we will be building the village for those that are still homeless. We would like to thank everyone that has has donated or helped with fund raising to make it possible to buy this land. We are still doing lots of fundraising for materials to begin the construction of new homes. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
This is a very exciting first step towards our goal of providing homes for many homeless families and giving them a great opportunity for a better future. We hope to have photos soon to show people the site for our Australian Village of Hope.

We have been given a newsletter written by two ladies Cay and Lisa from Australia who contacted us after the 60 Minutes show. They flew to Haiti and were working with Ps. Etienne Prophete and HCM volunteering. They also took medical supplies which were donated for the hospital and clinics and the Trauma Teddies which were donated by a Sydney hospital and dressed by local school children. It's good to see more Aussies willing to help those in need in Haiti. Thank you ladies.

Dear Reader and Supporter:
HCM is reaching a high level of success. We wonder sometimes why bad things happen. They may be a wake-up call for us to get into a higher level in our commitment with God. This time HCM is flying high and will probably soar with the eagles. Here are the recent realizations that have taken place in the past months:
- Three houses are being built. One of them is almost finished.
- There is an average of seven surgeries per day when the surgeons are in place.
- Distribution of 90 kits containing hygiene, pots and pans, silverware, etc.
- Food is distributed to 44 churches and schools, two orphanages, four nutrition centers.
- Life is coming back for many people and churches are full beyond capacity.
- A devise has been put in place for safe water at the Fonds-Parisien compound.
- There was a distribution of 90 mattresses to homeless and wounded people.
- School children are back to classes and work to knock down the two top stories of the high school at Port-au-Prince is in progress.
- Landslides have been prevented by the building of the retaining wall at Nan Plaisir church and school.
- Tents have been distributed to over 100 families.
- Several portions of land have been purchased to build houses, elementary school and university to replace the big loss at Port-au-Prince.
- Several churches and school buildings have been repaired.
- We have an average of 30 visitors per week. This time we have 54 on campus. Those visitors render a tremendous service to the mission. They build, clean, treat patients, do surgeries, etc.
We thank God for our supporters, the Board of HCM and the field workers that are restless to get the job done in order to make life possible for God’s people in Haiti. (Hebrews 6:10; 1 Corinthians 15:58)
With the KINGDOM in mind, the best is yet to come.

We Are Moving along in the Right Direction
John 21 tells the story of the disciples that went out fishing. They spent all night long fishing but catching nothing. Jesus showed up in the morning and asked them if they had anything to eat. No, they answered. Jesus then told them to cast the net at the right side of the boat. They caught a great quantity of fish. There is something about doing something right. Yes, Haitian Christian Mission is not sitting on the ruble of deaths and destroyed buildings to cry. It is moving along the right way.
International Disaster Emergency Services represented by Joe Luttrell came to Haiti and completed the building of the house for Tiline Derot that was burned down. Besides this sister organization has granted funds for 15 houses. We want to build them earthquake proof.
Land purchase– The Board of the mission has allocated the money to buy the 40 plus acres of land to build houses, school, university and athletic field. We are home free now. Wendy Zehner, Edwens Prophete and Paige Zahn are now doing a wonderful work of promotion to build those facilities while our friends in Australia led by Steve and Debbie Rasmussen are working on collecting money to build townhouses for the wounded, the broken legged or legless people and the homeless. These two young people are go-finders that want to bring the mission to a higher level in TV presentations and radio talk. The benefit dinner headed by Wendy in Atlanta was a true success.
Tents – The 70 tents that Capital City Christian sent to HCM were sent under diplomatic protection to facilitate a quick delivery. We are waiting for word of their arrival. That will be a relief to the people who are getting wet when it rains.
Building repairs – Many church and school buildings are now in repair or have been repaired to continue the task that God has entrusted us with. The panic is still there for some children who will not sit under a concrete roof. Most schools in the countryside are functioning.
Transportation – After six months in Haiti custody customs, the super cab pick up is released. Now it is serving our visitors and missionaries. We thank Kingsway Christian for the large donation. In the meantime, we are waiting to hear about the ambulance from Mike Jernigan.
Food – The container of food that IDES and Mike Cohoon sent to HCM through Lifeline Christian reached its destination and is now available for distribution to the thousands awaiting relief.
Orphanage– Dr. Harvey Montijo is so interested in the orphanage that he wrote a check of $5000 to lodge the children while he is making plan to build.
Project Haiti heart – This sister organization working side by side with HCM sent a container full with all kinds of supplies, tools and equipment while preparation is under way for a larger medical facility including an Emergency room.
Help needed – At this point of time, we need funds to build and to continue feeding; surgeons, orthopedists, eye doctors, dentists, heart specialists and so on to help at the aftermath quake. We appreciate invitation to speak at church, rallies, VBS and camps.
With the KINGDOM in mind, the best is yet to come.

We Are Moving on
Tents – Ike Pinkston of Capital City Christian Church has been facilitated by Project Haiti Heart to send 70 canopy tents to Haiti. Those tents are to arrive in Haiti some time during the week after April 11. In the meantime American Rehabilitation Center made some tent distribution along with World Vision with food distribution to 75 families.
Land purchased – Betty reports that the land to build the kindergarten through high school and university is secured. We are drawing up blueprints to build as soon as money is on hand. We are inviting groups to come help us build houses at $15,000 each and school buildings later on.
Office space – The temporary office space is almost completed for occupation. This had to be done because the mission has no office space at this time.
Baptisms: 351 persons were baptized from different churches after January 12, 2010, reports Jonas Dorlus.
Medical care – Some of our trauma patients are recuperating steadily. Rose-Michelle (shown in the pictures) came close to losing her legs, but is now working and needs a place to live. HCM and PHH are working with us on relocating those many unfortunate people.
Education – Schools reopen timidly in the countryside. At Port-au-Prince, very few of them are open because the campuses are occupied by victims of the earthquake.
Translators and employees – These people, who lost their home and have no place to sleep but the floor, yet they work daily to facilitate the operations in Fonds-Parisien in whatever way they can. They must be provided housing. Our Haitian doctors are sleeping on the floor.
Wendy Zehner and Edwens – These two young people are new additions to work nationally and internationally.
Lance-Kingsway Woodworking Shop is now in production. Most tools are bought. Evans Charles is working hard to teach and make furniture.
Sponsorship children – We are still looking for some missing sponsored children. Parents moved away or have no house. Those that we see are living in tent cities and life is just miserable. This is why we need to built for them.
Helping hands – We thank all the groups, churches and individuals from US, Canada, Australia, Barbados and other places around the world that have helped us in the desperate situation after the earthquake. Haiti will revive for the better. God is with us. Thank you and thank you!
With the KINGDOM in mind, the best is yet to come.

Let Us Move on
After Nehemiah returned from the Babylonian captivity, he did not sit down crying over the rubles of Jerusalem. He said “Come, let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and we will no longer be in disgrace” (2:17). Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, we could do something or nothing and cry defeat. The do-nothing attitude is unacceptable. It paralyzes body, mind, and spirit to the point that our system becomes dull and forgets the continued needs. Jesus said: “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working” (John 5:17). We are thankful to all those who continue raising funds and continue helping REBUILD. It is imperative that we do not stop now.
-
Housing – The people who are wounded, the homeless and our own Haitian Christian Mission employees who lost their Houses and possessions need shelter. Those left sleeping in the streets are now being rained on and this also spreads disease. We must provide shelter. This is now as essential as food and medicine.
We are planning a building system of small two to three-room apartments. Those who already have their land will have individual units ofthe same size. Each unit will have a kitchen and a porch. Communal outhouses will be built for groupings of ten apartments. Australia has already named their future group “Australian Village of Hope.” We estimate $15,000 will build a unit to include fence, water and maintenance. We appeal for help. We need to rebuild the mission compound that was destroyed in Port-Au-Prince. Offices are needed, places to keep equipment, files and computers for keeping records. People are moving to Fonds-Parisien and are buying up the land quickly. We are in the process of buying from 36 to 40 acres of land toward achieving that goal. The Nehemiah Project is heading up this project, but we need your continued support in rebuilding the mission.
- Education – Practically all the schools at Port-au-Prince from kindergarten through university are destroyed. Students will not have a school to attend for years unless we move the schools to the countryside. Our High school in Port au Prince is damaged beyond repair. We have children in the sponsorship program as well as other students that have no way to move to another country or town. It is wise to build the schools at Fonds-Parisien. We must not let the brilliant minds slumber in despair. The property we hope to purchase will also be a place to build the school.
- Medical care – The medical care clientele of Fonds-Parisien is growing up to 250,000 people rapidly. At this time, an average number of patients from 300 to 400 people are seen per day and 4 to 6 babies are born every day in our small hospital. It is important that the medical facilities be expanded to host the growing clientele. Project Haiti Heart will help with this project.
- Invitation to speak – We have a lot on our plate. We need to move on. Please come join us to build…. Organize work teams….. Do fundraising….. Talk to groups about HCM.. Talk to people who can help and tell them we need their help before the situation in Haiti is forgotten. Invite us to come and present the program.
With the KINGDOM in mind, the best is yet to come.

March 3, 2010
During the past weeks, Haiti has remained calm but the pain kept on going. The International Community has expressed love, concern and appreciation to the Haitian people. All the way from Australia through Dominican Republic, aid has been poured on Haiti. The people cannot rejoice because they are in pain. But at least they consider themselves blessed for the high regard they have the objects of.
Several groups are lined up to help build the kindergarten building, the elementary building and the high school building destroyed or damaged. The high school building cannot be repaired. We have decided to build at Fonds-Parisien. On top of that Georgia Tech University wants to build a university. We receive the challenge of building a village or villages for the wounded and the people who have no place to go to after they are healed. Two days ago, it rained at Port-au-Prince and it is reported that at least eight people sleeping on the street were drowned. Those who do not have family are moving into Fonds-Parisien. We have a great number of them. We want to relocate them.
At this moment, we are seeking on buying a large piece of land. We are seeking to buy 35 acres for the school and university and another 20 acres for the village that we intend to call ‘Centennial Christian Village’. We need $20,000 (US) to buy the land for the village. If it takes, the Lord would win a great battle over the enemy.
The medical work pursues its course rapidly. Many foreign doctors and surgeons are on campus to treat patients and do surgeries. Betty reports that the doctors see between 200 and 300 patients per day and the surgeons are operating on five to seven patients per day. Pregnant women come all the way from Port-au-Prince to deliver their babies at the hospital. Project Haiti Heart intends to build the Emergency Room as soon as possible because of the great number of trauma patients coming in all the time.
We received a donation of $10,000 (US) to buy tools for the woodworking shop. The lumber is already bought. So we will be able to teach people and send them out with a trade. This is good for the people who are in our midst and cannot go home soon. They will receive a trade to take home to help their families.
We are transferring the office from Port-au-Prince to Fonds-Parisien. The process has already begun. Our builders are working on constructing the office. We will have high tech communication there. The team from Australia will find us ready to make their trip enjoyable. We are in need of at least 100 town houses at this moment. It is estimated that it will cost $15,000 to build one house to include water, electricity, sewage, roads, guard and fence for the property. From that money we can put an office to guard the property. We already have much of the land offered to us to buy.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Thank you so much for your wholehearted concerns, donations, and prayers these last few days! It means a lot to us and the Haitian people. We know these times are tough to handle, but God will make a way as He always has.
Here is the latest news from Etienne this morning:
Christ for All Hospital in Fonds-Parisien is full of people coming from Port-au-Prince for medical help. Praise God we have fuel for the generator from Jemani, D.R. sponsored by US World Bank. They are supplying us with as much as we need. Jemani is just 20 miles from Fonds-Parisien.
A lot of people from Port-au-Prince are in Fonds-Parisien for rescue. Etienne said the situation is overwhelming. Henry Brousseau’s daughter's funeral is today at 3pm. She was only 19, a student at Le Pasteur College where she was in her first year pursuing a degree of Laboratory Science. The college collapsed with all the students.
At our Port-au-Prince home, people from the neighborhood and other areas have come for support and rest. There is not enough supply or room inside, and some are sleeping on the yard or wherever they could find. Ketel is at the house trying to control the situation.
I was scheduled to go Tuesday the 19th, but unfortunately the FAA has postponed all commercial flights. Yesterday, I met with the founder of Americare who used to send flights for emergency, but because of overwhelming aids flying to Haiti they are not able to send any flights this time. I have another reservation with American Airlines for the 25th of this month. I hope they will allow us to go this time. In the mean time, we are still working on finding ways to help.
May God continue to bless you for your prayers, your love, your concern, your spiritual support, and your financial support.
Love,
Betty Prophete.

Dear HCM friends,
We are in awe over the situation here. Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Leogane, Petit-Goave are all affected terribly. Wherever I can go in PAP, I see bodies decayed on top of each other. People do not sleep inside for fear of more earthquakes and buildings falling.. We are afraid of an epidemic on the survivors. There is relief sent, but it will take time to make distribution. Looters are all over the city. All stores are closed at Port-au-Prince. Large crowds are flooding the campus at Fonds-Parisien and the high school campus at Port-au-Prince and our house yard at Port-au-Prince. We have a lot of mouths to feed. The container of food is helping a lot. The high school, the elementary school, two churches at Port-au-Prince are to be town down and rebuilt after damage.
We do not have a complete assessment of the damage because we are busy with the wounded and the sick. It is difficult to go anywhere because of decayed bodies and road blocks by electric wires and post, and concrete blocks on the streets. This is only a summary. I will send it while this Internet service is working temporarily.
More later.
Etienne
